* So-called A/B testing allows to test performance of two or more different pages.
* Multivariate test allow to test various sections of the page. Read Google's [http://www.google.com/support/websiteoptimizer/bin/topic.py?hl=en&topic=14314 testing strategies] for more information

For simple A/B testing, you will have to insert some JavaScript code into each of the concerned pages, i.e. the testing pages and the "goals" pages (where users should land).
